This Paul Graham article on doing what you love is worth a read. It's a little long, though.
A line I liked, from the notes: "The reason the young care so much about prestige is that the people they want to impress are not very discerning." (I'd include me among "the young" in that statement, though some days lately I'm feeling pretty old.) There were several other good ones . . .

"It might be a good rule simply to avoid any prestigious task. If it didn't suck, they wouldn't have had to make it prestigious."
and also...
"Parents move to suburbs to raise their kids in a safe environment, but suburbs are so dull and artificial that by the time they're fifteen the kids are convinced the whole world is boring."
those are both pretty good quotes.
