Voice of the Generation?

The question is: Why does every generation have to have a voice. I can honestly say that I can't relate at all to most of the people my age as far as general characteristics ascribed to this generation.

I think our generation is too diverse and divided to have one voice. If anything, our voice is probably a commercial for a cellular phone - you know, one of the ones that comes with a buttload of free minutes.

As far as literature goes, the impression that I get is that most young writers are too concerned with getting published or apppeasing their creative writing professor or copying off of Kerouac or some other dead writer. All of the "creative types" are also way too concerned with being seen in their hand sewn scarf with a cup of coffee in their hand than with actual creation.

Don't get your hopes up for a generational voice. (We don't even have an official name.) We're too concerned with looking cool and taking the easy way out.

It sucks being such a pessimist.
